August is the month this valley stops pretending to be scenery.
Ferragosto falls on Saturday the 15th — a national holiday, the symbolic peak of the Italian summer, and older than the church feast it became: the Romans kept it as the Feriae Augusti, Emperor Augustus's August rest period, later absorbed into the Assumption. Offices close, banks close, most shops close. Picture the day and you probably picture a beach. Around us, it looks different: the mid-month is when the towns put their tables out.
Here is the month, in order.
Cortona · 11–15 August
The Sagra della Bistecca, sixty-five years old this summer — Chianina beef over charcoal in the Parterre gardens, running right through to Ferragosto itself. It is the valley's opening argument that August inland is about eating.
Le Poggiola · 13–16 and 20–23 August
A small place outside Arezzo with a long memory: the 148th Ferragosto Puggiulino, held across two long weekends. Goose cooked to old recipes, macaroni rolled by hand, and a Palio raced between the districts to close each Sunday. If you want the version of Ferragosto nobody's phone knows about, it is this one.
Saturday 15 August
Ferragosto proper. Wherever you are in Italy that day, book lunch ahead — the places that open run a single menu, and they fill.
Montepulciano · 22–30 August
The Bravìo delle Botti: nine days of processions and district rivalry, ending on Sunday the 30th when the barrels are raced through the historic centre to Piazza Grande. The race is the finale; the whole last week belongs to it.
And Lucignano, our own town? It has no Ferragosto festival of its own — the feast is kept at the Collegiata and the churches around it. On the 15th the historic centre closes to cars, so you park outside the walls and walk in through Porta San Giusto, which is honestly the right way to arrive here any day of the year.
That is what August holds, within an evening's reach of our table. Some guests go out for all of it. Some pick one afternoon and keep the rest for the pool. There is no wrong answer — the valley doesn't mind, and neither do we.
